We want to empower the trash picker's children. We want them to discover a pathway to a better life and believe in a future beyond the trash heap.
Most of the trash pickers live in illegal dwellings with an average income of around US$50 a month. There are no social safety nets. By the age of 8 or 9 years, children are out helping their parents pick up trash. The cycle of poverty continues from generation to generation and without outside intervention, they have little hope for a better life.
Our goal is to break the generational cycle of thinking that picking trash is their only option.
